West Ham will play host to Brighton in a Premier League match at the London Stadium on Tuesday. Only three points separate the hosts and the visitors who are currently sixth and eighth in the standings respectively.

West Ham have won four and lost once in their last five matches and that defeat came against league leaders Liverpool. Their last two games were wins over Manchester United and Arsenal and will be confident of another good result on Tuesday.

Brighton have lost only one out of their last six matches and will be hoping for a win to climb up the standings. They are heading into this game on the back of a 4-2 win over Tottenham.

Manchester United’s scoring woes continued in a 2-0 loss at West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday, with Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus netting second-half goals.

United has now failed to score in its last four games in all competitions — that hasn’t happened since 1992 — and in five of its last six matches. Rasmus Hojlund, the club’s $82 million offseason signing, was hauled off in the 57th minute as his Premier League drought extended to 14 games.

What United would give to have a player in the scoring form of Bowen, who exchanged passes with Lucas Paqueta and bundled in a finish — at the second attempt — past goalkeeper Andre Onana to give West Ham the lead in the 72nd minute with his 11th goal in the league this season.

Kudus then pounced on a mistake by Kobbie Mainoo before being played through by Paqueta to drive home the second goal in the 78th. It was the Ghana international’s fourth goal in as many games.

The late goals spoiled a composed debut for United by 19-year-old defender Willy Kambwala, who was brought in to fix a center-back crisis and did little wrong alongside Jonny Evans — a player 16 years older.

It’s the issues at the other end of the field that are likely to be really worrying United manager Erik ten Hag after the team’s 13th defeat in 26 games in all competitions this season. United hasn’t had that many defeats before Christmas since the 1930-31 campaign.

David Moyes has confirmed that Lucas Paqueta is suffering from a knee injury and he is one of three players nursing such a problem alongside Michail Antonio and Kurt Zouma.

It must also be noted that Nayef Aguerd is also touch-and-go and is one of two players due to head to the African Cup of Nations this month alongside Ghanaian sensation Mohammed Kudus.

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi will definitely have to make do without one of his stalwarts, Lewis Dunk, who picked up his fifth booking of the season against Tottenham for a challenge on Dejan Kulusevski.

Dunk takes his place on the sidelines with Joel Veltman, Ansu Fati, Julio Enciso, Kaoru Mitoma, Simon Adingra, Solly March, Adam Webster and Tariq Lamptey, while Igor and Facundo Buonanotte also picked up knocks in midweek.

David Moyes' side produced a brilliant defensive display to beat Arsenal in north London last time out, making it three wins on the bounce and just one defeat from their last eight top-flight matches.

Brighton were similarly impressive in easing past Tottenham, even if they did concede twice late on to set up a somewhat nervy finish having taken a four-goal lead.

The injury-plagued Seagulls have struggled for consistency this season, but victory in their opening match of 2024 would take them level on points with the Hammers.

Kurt Zouma remains a doubt for West Ham after failing a fitness test ahead of the Arsenal match, with the Frenchman picking up a knee injury in training.

Lucas Paqueta does miss out, having limped off with a knee issue of his own against the Gunners, while both Nayef Aguerd and Mohammed Kudus have officially departed for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Brighton's long injury list has been added to after Igor and Facundo Buonanotte were forced off in the win over Tottenham, with both unlikely to feature at the London Stadium.
