The imminent commencement of the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship is eagerly anticipated, scheduled to unfold from December 26, 2023, to January 5, 2024. As the second week of the IIHF World Junior Championships get underway, the action heats up as the remaining teams get set for the quarterfinals.
Though Slovakia finished second in Group B after an abysmal showing in their preliminary stage finale against the United States, that does not take away from an overall performance in the opening games. Their offense, led by the tournament leading scorer, Servac Petrovsky, ended up with 19 goals in its four games, third only to the Americans and Canada.
Slovakia has not made it beyond the quarterfinals since winning bronze in 2015.
Finland was a team expected to challenge for the top spot in Group A, but a difficult loss to Canada in game one, followed up by a stunning loss to Germany put Leijonat in a tough spot. However, they rallied to beat both Latvia and rival Sweden to grab third. They will try and get past the quarterfinals for the first time since losing to Canada in the Gold Medal Game two years ago.
The 2024 World Juniors are here. Ten countries are in Sweden for the next couple of weeks as a gold medal and global bragging rights are up for grabs.
The annual tournament features the top U20 NHL prospects from around the globe. From first-round selections to potential picks in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft, this competition gives the future of the NHL their biggest platform to date.
No country has three-peated at the World Juniors since the Canadians ripped off four in a row during the late 2000s. Canada is looking to change that in 2024, as the maple leaf earned gold in 2023 and 2022.
The action begins on Dec. 26 and is set to run for 11 days in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship is about to get underway and will run from Dec. 26, 2023 through Jan. 5, 2024. All of the tournament's games will be played in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The action begins with the United States facing Norway in one of four games to open the tournament. Meanwhile, defending champion Canada will begin its quest for a third consecutive World Junior Championship when it plays Finland in the preliminary round.
In total, 10 different countries will compete in the World Junior Championship. The United States is in Group B and will play its games at Frolundaborg in Gothenburg, as will Czechia, Norway, Slovakia and Switzerland. On the other hand, Group A will be comprised of Canada, Finland, Germany, Latvia and Sweden, and those teams will play their preliminary round games at Scandinavium in Gothenburg.
Russia remains ineligible to compete in international play due to the country's invasion of Ukraine.
The top four countries in each group will advance to the quarterfinal round, which is scheduled for Jan 2. The semifinals will take place on Jan. 4 with the championship and third-place games following on Jan. 5.
The 2024 World Juniors are here, as one of the most exciting hockey tournaments is set to take place in Sweden. The competition is a chance not only for the top teenagers in the world to showcase their talent, but also an opportunity to bring a championship to their country.
Canada enters this year as back-to-back gold medalists, coming off an overtime win over Czechia in the 2023 gold medal game. There has been no country to three-peat at the World Juniors since the Canadians ripped off five in a row during the late 2000s.
This year's World Juniors is being played outside North America for the first time since before COVID. Gothenburg, Sweden is the host site for the 2024 tournament.
The games in Gothenburg will be split between Scandinavium and Frolundaborg, two arenas in the city. Group A will play at Scandanavium, while Group B will be at Frolundaborg. The quarterfinals will be split between the two sites before Scandinavium hosts the semifinals and medal matches.
Gothenburg was supposed to host the 2022 World Juniors, however, the IIHF moved the site to Halifax, N.S. and Moncton, N.B. instead due to COVID. This is the first time Gothenburg will host the U20 competition, and seventh time the tournament is being held in Sweden.
The IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship was officially held first in 1977. In those years, NHL players were not allowed to compete in the Olympics, so the World Juniors were one of the only events in which players from the Western Hemisphere came face-to-face with players from the Soviet Union on the ice.
The tournament is particularly prestigious in Canada, but it’s an incredibly important stage for under-20 players who are trying to showcase their skills before the NHL entry draft. The main tournament features only the top 10 junior hockey teams in the world, so it’s truly an event for the best of the best young players in the sport.
A rematch of last year’s Gold Medal Game will determine one of the semifinal spots in Sweden.
Led by the potential No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NHL Draft, Macklin Celebrini, Canada is another solid favorite to win it all for the third year in a row. They did show some signs of weakness against Sweden during the group stage, leading to a second-place finish in Group A. Celebrini is currently tied for second in team scoring, potting four goals and four assists.
It has not been as fruitful of a tournament thus far for the Czechs. After getting blown out, 6-2, by rival Slovakia in their tournament opener, Czechia has been playing catchup. They came close to upsetting the U.S. last Friday, ultimately losing in a shootout, before securing third place with a win over Switzerland on New Year’s Eve.
Czechia did earn a win over Canada in the first game of the tournament in Halifax last year, before losing in overtime in the championship game.
The Americans’ offense carried them to finishing atop their group for the fourth consecutive tournament. Despite having scares against Norway and Czechia, the U.S. won all four group-stage games, outscoring opponents 29-9. The question will be, how far can they go? Before losing to Canada in the semis last year, the Americans were stunned by Czechia in the quarterfinals.
